On Thursday 1 May 2025 An event for World Labor Day is organized in Mogadishu by PWDs and ODPs.  The represented of More than 15 organizations participated made call to action for the labor market in Somalia national and international consideration to the disability inclusion. The participants shared more about the labor market and disability inclusion in Somalia gap, barriers and opportunities.

The participants ere given the copies of two important international laws, the CRPD, United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with disability. And the international convention on civil and political participation Rights. These two international conventions protect the rights of citizens to participate in the civil and political life in Somalia.   UNSOM HRPG office made the distribution of the books for the SDN.

The PWDs are working national campaign for national disability employment and political participation quota implementation in the articles of the national disability act. This will be key the future work of the disability inclusion in Somalia for the private and public sectors.

OPDs realized the establishment of an alliance as given by experienced people and resource support sources, which can enable the implementation of national disability employment and political participation quotas. The SONSA, UNSOM HRPG, and UK embassy members’ office working with the CSOs in Somalia can be the prime members of the alliance.

Discussion Made in the event

  1. Employee Recruitment discrimination. In the major employer for the private and public sector in Somalia there is exclusion and limitation the participation of the PWDs for lack of policies, procedures and data entry  and interviews.  This is one of the main obstacle prevent more persons member the PWDs to be visible in the workplace in Somalia.
  2. Skill gap for the major disability people in Somalia suffer disproportional skills gap. This means most of PWDs has no skills that fit to the employer demand and market jobs. This is one of the barrier that hinder mass recruitment for the employment disability inclusion in Somalia.
  3. Workplace discrimination in some case where member from the PWDs access to fill in job and secured employment. The suffer workplace hostile barrier from the working facilities, equipment and infrastructure. There is also bullying among the employees made by some workers against other workers with impairments verbal attach, physical attack and emotional damage.
  4. Enactment of national and international laws the UN CRPD, NDA, ILO and Somalia constitution all demonstrate the inclusion of the disability in the employment opportunities private and public. As well as national disability  policies and NTP national Transitional Plan.2024-2029
  5. Monitoring and evaluation for the implementation of the and the investigation of all cases that happened every and report in the end of every year.

Call to Action

Governments and CSO organizations should establish and enforce clear policies that either mandate or encourage the recruitment of persons with disabilities PWDs to promote workplace diversity and equality.

Governments and CSO organizations should ensure the implementation of disability people employment quota in the national disability act and the CRPD. And the punishment for the violation of the act.

Governments and CSO organizations should work with PWDs and ODPs for the participation of employment opportunities in the private and public sectors. And support to mobilize the PWDs to learn skills to reduce the skill gap.
