SDN Participates in Election Outreach for Persons with Disabilities

by admin

On  25 April 2025 Members of the Somali Disability Network (SDN) participated in an election outreach session organized by the Banadir Regional Local Authority in the Dharkenley District. The event brought together over a hundred participants, including persons with disabilities, community leaders, and local officials, to raise awareness about voter registration and encourage inclusive participation in upcoming elections.

The Chairperson of SDN delivered a strong message emphasizing the importance of the participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities in all stages of the electoral process. He encouraged PWDs to actively come forward in large numbers and exercise their right to vote, highlighting that their engagement is essential for ensuring that the voices of persons with disabilities are represented in local decision-making.

Village leaders and the district commissioner pledged their support by providing a transportation system to assist persons with disabilities, enabling them to travel directly from their homes to the voter registration office. This initiative aimed to remove physical barriers that often prevent PWDs from accessing registration centers and participating fully in the electoral process.

SDN emphasized that PWDs should not only participate in voter registration but also in the selection of candidates for the District Council elections. Active engagement in both stages will strengthen their access to policies and decision-making processes at the local and regional levels in Banadir, ensuring that disability inclusion is integrated into governance and development planning.
