Two Days’ Workshop to Support DPOs training the Disabled People Rights Advocacy

On Saturday and Sunday 02-03  September 2023 two days training workshop is started for the support the members of the DPOs   active disability rights advocacy training. The workshop is held in Mogadishu Hayat Hall Restaurant with Participants of 15 persons from the DPOs.  The Participants made introductions each other and the facilitators asked questions about the disability rights and disability advocacy.  The workshop is funded by Save children International through TOFI program and implemented by SDN Somalia disability Networks

 

In the   day one the participants learned the types of disability people, the types of disability barriers the social, infrastructures and the systems existing in the country.  Where some of the participants made active participation and contributions for the lesson and case studies supportive the workshop participants understand the disability advocacy implementation process with workshop guide and ToR PPT slide share presentations used in the workshop.  The facilitators made coaching and questions of the workshop lessons as interactive approach.

 

Group work in the workshop

The group work is made for the participants in the session with three groups randomly selected by number with gender representations. The groups were given questions that came from the lessons taken in the training overall barriers against the disability people. The three thematic topics used where the physical barriers, communication barrier and altitudinal barriers the three frontline of the disability barriers. Where participants made respond the topics given and made presentation in front of the participants fallowed by question cross groups and support answers in the group members.

 

Day two on Sunday 03 September 2023 the workshop proceeds the training for the participants starts with Quran and the participants made the registration of the list and the recap of the day one activities where the members made overview of the yesterday lessons  the definition and the barriers of the disability people in Somalia and in the world for the participation public and private way life and  services.

 

The facilitators started the lessons with articles that address the barriers raised in the yesterday session mostly articles 1 up to article 4 the propose and obligations. Articles 5 up to 10 human rights protection for children, women.  The articles 11 up to 23 human rights protection, freedom of expression, life, justice,  from article 24  up to 40 the education, health care, employment, rehabilitation, participation life and policy,  establishment census and international cooperation’s national implementation, monitoring, reporting, the conference of the state parts and the committees

 

Group questions and answers were made the participants raised question for the CRPD articles the propose, obligation, protection,  social and political participation, implementation and report. The facilitators made clear the main point of the CRPD which are the propose made for the articles, the obligation, implementation. The participants found ideas and education for the disability people rights inclusion advocacy in Somalia.

 

Recap and Summery Of the two days’ Workshop activities  

  • Introduction and the definitions of the disability types and the barriers that exist in the social the family and the public places. That most people suffer without protection. Lack of awareness for the families and members of the society.
  • The barriers which are physical, communication and attitudinal and what causes he barriers in the public the markets, schools and the private in the homes of the families and the villages which have collective barriers against the PWDs which prevents access to education, employment and basic human rights.
  • The attitudinal barriers that is common for most PWDs regardless of their age meet in the society stigma, abuses, curses and negligence which makes humiliations and risk for many people with disabilities every day.
  • Lack of national disability census that could help figure out the number and the gap in the disability and the needs existing on the ground. Referral data and information supportive for intentions on the ground to address the needs of the PWDs
  • Lack of policies that can help the PWDs access basic education, health care and disability prevention service the rehabilitation and vaccinations.

Recommendations in the Day One of the Workshop

  • Raise awareness for the disabled people rights in the society public and private with practical participations of the PWDs who can make visible the legacy of the barriers and the discriminations  against the PWDs in Somalia. Through training for the CRPD articles and international anti-discrimination convention
  • Raise advocacy for the PWDs rights in the society the changes of attitudinal, behavioral and cultural practices which contains some discriminations ageist the PWDs. to make public campaigns community training and guiding the correction of the bad behavioral and attitudes.
  • Develop national disability census, national disability strategic policy, legislations and national disability funds
  • Strengthen the capacity of the DPOs and service providers to be active participation the education, care, protection and the development of the PWDs regardless of age and disability type.
  • Insure the disability inclusion in the humanitarian, development and participation of the decision making the disability people and their organizations or actors who can make protective role in the decision making tables
