During the Civil Society Summit 2025 in Somalia, held on 8th, 9th, and 10th December, the Boot Camp Showcase on Accessibility and Disability Inclusion, organized by the IEDP Institute for the Education of Disabled People, presented innovative solutions aimed at improving independent living for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
One of the most outstanding presentations was the Smart Home Control System, a technology that enables users to manage their home environment using a single control platform. This showcase highlighted how inclusion, innovation, and technology can work together to remove everyday barriers faced by PWDs.
The Smart Home Control System allows users to open and close doors, windows, and gates with ease. It also enables the control of essential home utilities such as lighting, air conditioning, water systems, electricity, and gas.
This innovation significantly reduces excessive physical movement for users and minimizes dependence on others, promoting safety, dignity, comfort, and full independence for people with mobility and physical impairments.
This transformative assistive technology was designed, developed, and produced by a PWD student member, Mr. Abdullahi Mohamud Ibrahim, demonstrating the impact of disability-inclusive education and investment in local innovation.
His work stands as a strong example of how persons with Disabilities are not only beneficiaries of development but also leaders and solution creators. The project received strong recognition at the summit as a practical and scalable solution for inclusive and accessible living in Somalia.
