On Thursday, 10 September 2025, members from Somali Disability Network (SDN) participated in a student award ceremony held at Albashir School in Mogadishu. The event celebrated the outstanding academic performance of a visually impaired student who achieved the highest score in the school for the Class Eight national exams. The celebration highlighted the student’s hard work, dedication, and resilience in overcoming challenges to excel academically.
Teachers and the school administration recognized the student’s achievements, emphasizing their commitment to supporting learners with visual impairments. Albashir School for the Blind continues to demonstrate that quality education is possible for all students, regardless of disability, when proper support systems are in place. The school leadership praised the determination and talent of visually impaired students who pursue education despite social barriers and limited accessibility in the wider community.
During the event, SDN delivered a speech commending Albashir School for its inclusive and empowering environment. The school is unique in that many of its teachers, staff, and administrators are visually impaired themselves, proving that disability is not a limitation to leadership, capability, or excellence. SDN highlighted that Albashir School stands as a model of how disability-led institutions can transform perceptions and create equal opportunities for learners.
SDN also praised the Banadir Region Education Directorate for its continued support to the school, including assistance with logistics, meals, accommodations, and essential learning resources. The Network encouraged additional support, partnerships, and donations to strengthen the school’s programs and expand its facilities. Such contributions will ensure that more visually impaired students can access free education, safe boarding, and the inclusive opportunities offered by Albashir School.
