Mr. Dalmar Maalin, a young man with visual impairment, has officially become a certified candidate of the Karaama Political Organization Party for the Banadir Region Local Council Elections. His courageous step into political leadership marks a historic milestone for the participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Somalia’s democratic process. Mr. Dalmar’s candidacy sends a powerful message that disability is not inability, and that PWDs have both the right and the capacity to lead.
Mr. Dalmar now stands as a national role model for PWDs across Somalia, inspiring young people with disabilities to engage in politics, leadership, and public service. His participation challenges long-standing stereotypes and barriers that have excluded PWDs from political spaces. His journey reflects the growing movement for disability inclusion, equal representation, and meaningful participation in decision-making at all levels of governance.
