by admin

The nine members of the Somalia Independent Human Rights Commission convened to elect the commission’s leadership, in line with its mandate. The election process brought together commission members as well as invited observers and participants from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), ensuring transparency, accountability, and broad stakeholder engagement.

The position of Chairperson was contested between Dr. Maryan Qasani and Dr. Omar Alaso. Following the voting process, Dr. Maryan Qasani was elected Chairperson after securing five out of nine votes cast by the commission members.

In the second round of voting, the position of Deputy Chairperson was contested and Mr. Mohamed Harun Bihi was elected with an overwhelming majority of eight out of nine votes. His election marked an important milestone, as he represents Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), reflecting the commission’s commitment to inclusive leadership and representation.

The commission also proceeded to elect its Secretary, with Ms. Fadumo Abdulkadir Yusuf elected to the position, thereby completing the leadership structure of the commission.

The Somali Disability Network (SDN) was among the CSOs and OPDs invited to observe and participate in the election process. SDN’s engagement underscored the vital role of civil society in strengthening democratic governance and human rights institutions. At the conclusion of the session, key speakers—including former Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi and the Chairperson of the Upper House Senate Committee for Justice and Human Rights—commended the commission’s work and congratulated the newly elected leadership, encouraging them to carry out their responsibilities with integrity and dedication.
