by admin

On Wednesday, 13 May 2026, the Federal Government of Somalia launched a two-day consultation conference for the preparation of Somalia’s Second Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report on the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The consultation conference, held on 13–14 May 2026, was organized by the National Bureau of Statistics Somalia under the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, with support from the United Nations Development Programme.

The event brought together representatives from government institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), development partners, youth groups, persons with disabilities (PWDs), diaspora communities, and education stakeholders to contribute to the national review process and strengthen the inclusive implementation of the SDGs in Somalia.

The Somali Disability Network actively participated in the consultation and presented key recommendations to ensure disability inclusion and the rights of persons with disabilities are fully reflected in Somalia’s national SDG review process.

The participation of organizations representing persons with disabilities remains essential in promoting inclusive development and ensuring that no one is left behind in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Day One Activities

The first day of the conference began with participant introductions and thematic presentations focusing on:

  • The concept and importance of the Voluntary National Review (VNR)
  • Somalia’s first VNR report submitted in 2022
  • Background and objectives of Somalia’s Second VNR 2026
  • Methodology, implementation progress, challenges, and recommendations related to the SDGs

Participants were later divided into thematic working groups, including:

  • Youth
  • Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
  • Diaspora
  • Education
  • Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)

Each group discussed and reviewed several targets and indicators related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The groups identified priorities, challenges, and practical recommendations to strengthen inclusive and sustainable development in Somalia.

Following the group discussions, presentations were delivered by each thematic group, followed by interactive question-and-answer sessions and discussions among participants.

Day Two Activities

On the second day, group discussions and presentations continued, allowing participants to further refine recommendations and provide additional input to the national review process.

The thematic groups on Youth, PWDs, Diaspora, Education, and CSOs continued their collaborative work on SDG-related priorities and implementation strategies. Group representatives again presented their findings and recommendations, followed by open discussions and question-and-answer sessions.

The two-day consultation conference highlighted the importance of inclusive participation, collaboration, and evidence-based policy recommendations in advancing Somalia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and the preparation of its Second Voluntary National Review Report for 2026.
