The 11th Engineering Design and Development (EDD) Demo Day was successfully held at Jamhuriya University of Science and Technology in Mogadishu, Somalia, bringing together engineering students, academics, and industry stakeholders to showcase innovative engineering solutions. The event featured a wide range of demonstrations and technology prototypes developed by students in the fields of civil, electrical, mechanical, software, and technological engineering. Many of the innovations were designed to support the development of Somalia’s public and private infrastructure while addressing practical community challenges.
One of the most outstanding innovations was presented by Mr. Abdullahi Omar Ibrahim, a young Somali engineering student with a disability from the Faculty of Engineering. He developed a smart white cane equipped with intelligent sensors to help persons with visual impairments navigate safely by detecting obstacles and improving independent mobility. The project demonstrated how engineering and assistive technology can promote inclusion and improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.
Students also showcased a smart home automation system that enables users to monitor and control household appliances remotely through a mobile application, highlighting the growing potential of digital technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) in Somalia.
Among the distinguished guests was Mr. Abdullahi Hassan, Chairperson of the Somali Disability Network (SDN), who attended the exhibition and commended the students for their creativity, technical excellence, and commitment to developing practical solutions that address real-world challenges.
Speaking during the event, the SDN Chairperson praised the young engineers for their innovation and encouraged them to continue developing inclusive technologies that contribute to sustainable development and improve the lives of all members of society, including persons with disabilities.
The Chairperson also expressed sincere appreciation to the administration of Jamhuriya University of Science and Technology, particularly the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, for organizing the Demo Day and fostering an environment that encourages research, innovation, and practical engineering solutions. He noted that initiatives such as the EDD Demo Day play an important role in nurturing future innovators and strengthening Somalia’s technological and industrial development.
